Duke of Edinburgh's Award

In Year 10 your son/daughter has the opportunity to apply for a place on the Academy’s Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a voluntary non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities designed to support the personal and social development of young people aged 14-25 regardless of gender, background or ability.

It offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities in their free time. The award is very prestigious and is widely recognised by educationalists and employers.

The award has 3 levels to achieve, bronze, silver and gold. At Emerson Park Academy we offer the bronze award and it is hoped this leads to students carrying on with their silver and gold awards at college or university.  The programme covers four areas which we aim to complete in the Autumn Term of Year 11.

Students will be expected to keep a record of their achievements within a secure area of the Duke Of Edinburgh website. The four sections cover:

  • Service:         Helping other people in school or the local community

  • Skill:              Learning a new skill or hobby or working to improve an existing

one, for example: playing a musical instrument or cooking.

  • Physical:        Taking part in a programme of physical activity including:

                                  sports, dance or fitness.

  • Expedition:   Training for, planning and completing a self-sufficient journey

on foot with an overnight camp.

All of the elements must be completed in the participant’s own free time and will require a considerable amount of commitment. From the first three sections students must commit to at least an hour a week for three months, and then choose one section to continue for six months.

Training for the expedition section takes place after school fortnightly and is compulsory.
