Design & Technology

The Design and Technology department mirrors the school’s vision and provides a broad curriculum which offers pupils a wide range of qualifications alongside gaining essential life skills. Our teachers bring their industry experience into the classroom to educate pupils on design in real life contexts. We enable all students’ to achieve their full potential through an inclusive range of content that is challenging, stimulating, inspirational and enjoyable.

Key Stage 3

In Year 7, 8 and 9 Design and Technology is taught on a carrousel rotation and each year group gains experience in a wide range of subjects including Textiles, Timbers, Food, Graphics and Electronics. Our Design and Technology curriculum is taught through a variety of creative, academic and practical activities that develop our pupils’ skill sets within each subject. Pupils learn how to effectively use research to inform their design decisions, know how to generate design ideas which solve current design problems and use a wide range of specialist tools and equipment to make successful quality products.

Key Stage 4

At key stage 4 we are proud to offer a wide range of excellent performing GCSE’s in Design and Technology including Textiles, Timbers, Food and Nutrition and a level 2 BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment.

Textiles

Textiles is extremely popular at Emerson Park Academy and we are proudly the only school in the borough to offer the subject at GCSE. Pupil’s will gain knowledge on the fashion and textiles industry and explore their creativity to design and make successful fashion and textile products. Past Textiles pupils have progressed onto top fashion colleges in London and gone on to set up their own fashion labels.

Timbers

In GCSE timbers the students develop their theory, creativity and practical skills. We are proud of the range of skills taught including routing, advanced computer aided design, metal turning with engineering elements and wood turning. It allows the students to express their developing talents.

Food and Nutrition

GCSE Food and Nutrition pupils widen their understanding of the subject areas, as well as gain new skills and become more competent in the kitchen environment. The subject encourages students to find their passion for cooking and continue to develop this well after leaving school. Whilst GCSE results have been very strong in recent years and we have seen some outstanding talent pass through our gates, it has always been an honour to watch students become happy and proud with their own development and achievements throughout their time here.

Construction and the Built Environment

Construction is a popular BTEC option and pupils gain both practical and theoretical skills in for building work, architecture and construction. In recent years, the DT department have seen students achieve 100% pass rate and leave EPA securing apprenticeships within areas such as engineering, construction and electronics as well as go on to study similar industries at college.

Extra-Curricular

The Eco Committee

The Emerson Park Academy plastic programme has been highly successful making eco bricks, and making the school Canteen zero plastic. The school is Placed 1st as a school in Europe recycling plastic from the Global Eco brick Alliance.

EPA has provided outreach lessons in this area and recently went to St. Joseph's School to give a hands-on experience.

Some quotes from the pupils of St. Joseph's are below.

"It was fascinating, and I liked that it helped our environment."

"It was really fun and I would like to try it again."

"It was good to learn a new thing."

"I can't believe how hard the bottle actually got."
